Health, Immunity & Pharmakeia

The War on the Human Being

Health care is supposed to heal. Yet a system built on profit incentives thrives when people are chronically unwell. From inventing new diseases to marketing drugs directly to consumers, there's a business model behind the epidemics of modern life. Meanwhile, the true determinants of health—nutrition, movement, sunlight, community—are sidelined.

Sick by Design

Disease‑Mongering & Marketing

Pharmaceutical companies don’t just treat disease; they create it. Critics call this disease‑mongering—the practice of turning risk factors and mild symptoms into lucrative diagnoses. High cholesterol becomes “hypercholesterolemia,” shyness becomes “social anxiety disorder,” fluctuating blood sugar becomes “metabolic syndrome.” By collaborating with advocacy groups and doctors, marketers convince healthy people they’re sick and need lifelong medication. The result is a population terrified of normal variations in mood, metabolism and temperament.

Direct‑to‑Consumer Advertising

Only the United States and New Zealand allow drug ads on television and social media. A 2025 analysis of 740 high‑engagement posts found that 69 % made efficacy claims, yet only a third mentioned risks. Seven of the ten largest drug companies spend more on marketing than on research and development. DTC advertising drives patients toward expensive brand‑name drugs over generics, fuels over‑diagnosis and normalises the idea that every feeling requires a pill. The medical regulators tasked with protecting consumers often rely on industry‑funded studies and allow commercials that gloss over side effects.

The Real Immune System

Your immune system is a complex network of organs, cells and signalling molecules. There’s no magic herb or supplement that “boosts” it. In fact, artificially increasing immune cell counts can be dangerous. The most effective strategies are boring and free: don’t smoke; eat plenty of fruits and vegetables; exercise regularly; maintain a healthy weight; limit alcohol; get adequate sleep; practice stress‑reduction techniques; and stay current with recommended vaccines. These lifestyle habits support a balanced immune system that can fend off infection without triggering autoimmunity.
